[Reporter : w:slim] Remote controls certainly make it easy for us to control our electronic devices.
Now imagine that your favorite electronics will be able to read your facial expressions to turn on‚ off‚ or skip to the next song.
That's what one Japanese engineer has started to develop.
Users can stick their tongue out or wink or use even more subtle movements.
The new invention is called the 'Mimi Switch' or 'Ear Switch'.
Tiny optical sensors on headphone-like device reads movements in the ear canal.
Kazuhiro Taniguchi the developer of the device says his remote will be popular not only among technophiles but also the elderly or people with disabilities.
Given Japan's increasing elderly population he says it's important to design while thinking about those who will have more limited motor functions.
The system he says can also be used as a warning device to alert family members if their elderly relatives are experiencing any body movements that are out of the ordinary.
He says this can allow seniors to live more independent lives.
If you're on the run it isn't too hard to find a vending machine to dole out snacks or coffee.
But now in Italy you can add fresh-baked pizza to that list.
Even though the country is aflush with world-famous pizzerias that sell pizzas for as little as 8 euros people are drawn to these new machines that can bake a pizza for almost half the price.
It's called the 'Let's Pizza' machine and using infra-red rays it will knead fresh flour‚ spread tomato sauce and sprinkle toppings before baking the pizza.
Customers only have to wait three minutes for the entire process and the cost is 4 to 5 euros.
The machine was developed as a joint-project between the University of Bologna and consumer goods company Unilever.
The mini-pizzeria which looks like a coffee machine offers four toppings and the developers think that the price will offer relief for those battered by the recession.
Even though Italy has the most number of vending machines of any Western European country some pizza lovers claim the pizza machines are insulting to their national food.
Nevertheless the machines have proven popular in test trials perhaps due in part to their novelty.
Looks aren't always what they seem.
In Poland one university has started a grandparent rental service.
For those without real grandparents it is now possible to hire the services of a grandma or grandpa.
The program started by Silesia University for the Elderly aims to match the elderly with families who wish to fill a generational void.
The rented grandparents help children with their homework tell them stories and teach them new hobbies.
The university charges no fee for the program.
Children say that it's just like spending time with a real grandparent.
