요약정보
Hillary Clinton's first overseas trip as the United States' top diplomat came to an end Sunday in Beijing.
The US Secretary of State left the Chinese capital ending her week-long trip to four Asian capitals including Seoul‚ Tokyo and Jakarta. While in Asia she dealt with various regional and bilateral issues inspiring new confidence in the US by listening to her Asian counterparts at a time when Washington is reviewing its foreign policy.
Her Asian tour was an opportunity for the US to make clear its stance on North Korea's nuclear and missile programs. As soon as Secretary Clinton embarked on her Asian tour she told reporters en route to Japan her first destination that once Pyeongyang moved toward verifiable denuclearization the US would be much more open and cooperative with the Stalinist state.
In South Korea meanwhile she said this depended on Pyeongyang as it had to stop insulting and refusing dialogue with Seoul if it wanted a different relationship with Washington. During her tour she also warned the communist state to refrain from any provocative action such as a missile launch.
As Secretary Clinton held talks with top government officials in each of the Asian countries the US South Korea Japan and China were able to check on one another's stances and pledge cooperation in dealing with North Korea's nuclear program. Now as these key members of the six-party nuclear talks promise further efforts to put the multilateral dialogue back in motion the six-party process could be gaining new momentum.
With the US announcing its new top representative on North Korean policies Stephen Bosworth it seems Washington is getting ready to get back in the game. Also Seoul's Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan is leaving for ministerial talks in China Tuesday which is expected to further boost momentum for future talks.
