The European Union is sending ships to combat piracy off the coast of Somalia starting next week.
The fleet of six warship and three reconnaissance aircraft will take the place of NATO forces which have been monitoring activity in the region and escorting humanitarian aid ships to the impoverished east African nation since October. The aid deliveries have been successful but the international fleet has had trouble controlling piracy in one of the world's busiest maritime areas.
[Interview : Javier Solana‚ EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy
] "You can be sure it is going to be a robust mission with the objective to accompany some of the ships that may cross the region‚ in particular those of the United Nations but other vulnerable ships and deter and protect. Therefore‚ I think it's going to be a useful operation to try to bring to that part of the sea more security which is badly needed."
The latest move comes as the pirates are growing bolder going after luxury cruise ships specifically the Nautica a liner with US-based Oceania Cruises while it was sailing in the Gulf of Aden. The attackers fired eight shots before the captain of the ship took evasive measures‚ accelerating abruptly outrunning the smaller boats the pirates were using.
[Interview : Wendy Armitage‚ Tourist from New Zealand] "It was really minor. But it was a surprise that they attacked us. And they did fire shots."
The ship sought safe harbor in Oman's capital Muscat stopping for a day before continuing on. But many fear that pirates now may be planning to target luxury cruise ships which generally carry wealthy tourists so that they can demand ransom from family members.
The EU contigent will arrive in the region on December 8th and the transfer of power is set for the 15th. The initial force will be made up of ships from France‚ Greece‚ Germany and Britain‚ with France and Italy deploying patrol aircraft. This will be the first European Union naval endeavor.
