요약정보
In the latest twist in Taiwan's political saga Chen Shui-bian the former Taiwanese president‚ was arrested on charges of corruption‚ money laundering and forging confidential documents.
Taiwan's Central News Agency says the ex-president whose presidential term ended in May has gone under more than five hours of questioning surrounding the allegations of taking bribes and embezzling at least 21 million dollars in government funds. The arrest came after a 21-hour court hearing.
[Interview : Huang Chun-ming‚ Taipei District Court Spokesman] "These crimes are subject to a minimum five years of imprisonment. He has been suspected of giving false evidence‚ and there was enough evidence that he might interfere with other witnesses or suspects. We therefore‚ approve the request of detention and barring him from receiving visitors."
Chen an ardent supporter of Taiwanese independence from China showed his cuffed hands to cameras outside the prosecutor's office in Taipei shouting "Long Live Taiwan!" and asserting his innocence.
[Interview : Chen Shui-bian‚ Former Taiwanese President ] "Here I would like to declare to you all‚ viva Taiwan. Viva the Taiwanese people. Long live Taiwanese democracy. Long live Taiwanese independence. Thank you very much. So long."
Chen denies all wrong-doing and insists the charges were planned by the current President Ma Ying-jeou saying Ma has collaborated with China to please Beijing. The Chinese government called Chen's claim a "sheer fabrication" and said Chen's ill intentions to avoid prosecution will be exposed in the end.
Eight out of 15 members of Chen's family and inner circle who have been suspected of corruption since 2006 were also arrested but no evidence in any of the cases has been made public so far.
Under Taiwanese law Chen can be detained for up to four months without being formally charged.
