요약정보
From floods to earthquakes‚ people in many regions around the world are suffering from the natural disasters.
In the case of earthquakes‚ seismologists are warning that even places considered safe including Korea should prepare for a contingency.
Kim Jiyoung tells us why.
More than 200 aftershocks have rattled the Tohoku region of northern Japan since Saturday's 7.2 magnitude quake claimed 10 lives and left hundreds injured.
In the tremor's aftermath‚ dozens remained trapped in isolated villages cut off from help.
The initial quake was powerful enough to be felt in Tokyo‚ some 400 kilometers to the south
[INTERVIEW : Resident of Miyagi Prefecture] ''The earth shook horribly. I was afraid that everything might crumble down.''
Japan is known as one of the most seismically active areas in the world.
It's the latest region to join an unenviable group of nations to be hit by quakes over the past month.
A massive 7.9 magnitude quake in central China's Sichuan Province left an estimated 70-thousand people dead‚ millions more homeless and created some 4-thousand ''quake orphans.''
Even in Korea‚ not known to be quake-prone‚ the country's largest island Jeju experienced a 4.2 magnitude quake‚ Jeju's second-largest tremor ever in late May.
And over in the Mediterranean‚ western Greece was rattled by a sizable 6.5 quake earlier this month that claimed at least two lives and injured more than 100.
Seismologists say there may be a scientific explanation for the recent string of quakes.
[INTERVIEW : Kim Sogu ‚Korea Seismological Institute] ''We have a new Ubiquitous Theory‚ which explains the dynamic triggering of the epicenter region that spreads to another area. It's not safe to say that Korea is earthquake-free.''
According to this theory and due to Korea's proximity to China and Japan‚ Korea is not safe from a powerful tremor sometime in the future.
The secret behind Japan's smaller number of victims was an alarm that warned residents of an impending quake‚ 10 seconds before it struck.
And authorities managed to assemble a crisis response team only seven minutes afterward.
Experts say such careful preparations and lightning-quick response often make the difference between life and death in quake country.
