The Nobel committee says this year's Prize in Physics goes to two laureates Albert Fert and Peter Grunberg for the discovery of giant magnetoresistance.
Giant magnetoresistance‚ also known as GMT‚ is used to save and read data on computer hard drives.
Starting in 1988‚ both Fert and Grunberg developed the technology separately.
First commercialized in 1997‚ GMT is the basic principle of hard disks today.
GMT brought about a breakthrough in gigabyte hard disks in minimizing size and is the first case to apply nano technology.
Albert Fert is currently a professor at Universite Paris-Sud in Orsay and Peter Grunberg is at Germany's Research Centre Julich.
The award ceremony is to take place on December 10th where the laureates will be awarded and share a prize of 1000 krones roughly 1.4 million U.S. dollars.
