요약정보
The Japanese leader's visit to the controversial war shrine gave rise to strong reactions from other nations as well.
China for one used harsh words to describe the visit.
Kang Minji has more.
"Koizumi is challenging international justice and trampling human conscience."
That's how China describes Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's latest visit to Yasukuni that enshrines World War II criminals.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a strong statement on Tuesday‚ saying that Koizumi has repeatedly hurt the feelings of the Chinese people‚ and that his acts have undermined Japan's state images and interests in the international community.
The statement was also carried by China's Xinhua News Agency and a major newspaper‚ People's Daily‚ echoing the government's view that denounces Koizumi's shrine visit in the strongest terms.
The United States‚ meanwhile‚ appears to take this incident as an internal Japanese matter‚ which Washington does not plan to weigh on.
SEAN MCCORMACK‚ ASSISTANT SECRETARY FOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS AND DEPARTMENT SPOKESMAN: "These are going to be the decisions that Japanese politicians and Japanese prime minister are going to have to make for themselves."
U.S. media reports pointed out how the Japanese prime minister's "provocative" visit is stirring anger among neighboring countries‚ especially Korea and China.
The Washington Post describes Tuesday's shrine visit as Koizumi's parting shot at his critics in Asia who have condemned his visits as a glorification of Japan's militarist past.
The New York Times reports Koizumi picked "the most politically sensitive and diplomatically explosive" day to pray at the Yasukuni Shrine‚ which has earned him political victories at home‚ but left Japan increasingly isolated in East Asia.
