Bidding to become the fourth player to win both the British Open and the senior version‚ the 51-year-old American had two birdies on either side of the turn before parring the final five holes.
The legend was joined at 4 under by Ireland's Mark McNulty and Australia's Mike Harwood on top of the scorecards.
Moving to footballit was announced that midfielder Park Ji-sung has finally been offered a contract extension by Manchester United on Friday.
The English Premier League club offered Ji-sung a two-year extension to the one year he has remaining on his current deal.
Since entering in 2005 as the first Korean in the Premier League‚ Park has had a breakout performance last season‚ scoring 8 goals in 28 appearances.
Terms of the extension were not disclosed and it is expected that he will likely sign the contract after United finishes its American tour this month.

NFL owners approved a proposed 10-year labor agreement with the Players Association on Thursday‚ leaving the league's lockout in the hands of the players' vote.
However‚ the players chose NOT to vote on Thursday night‚ saying they had not seen the full proposal.
But league representatives do remain confident that the players will go to a vote by Friday evening local time to determine the future of next season.
