Starting off with soccer updates it was announced that Korea's Chung Mong-joon will be running for his 5th FIFA vice-presidency this Wednesday at the congress of the Asian Football Confederation.
Now running against the current vice-president is Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of Jordan‚ who is the president of the 13-strong West Asian Football Federation.
Now Chung has been heading FIFA as the vice-president since the year 1994 and observers say that if he survives the election‚ he may run for the top sport at FIFA's congress at the end of May.
Meanwhile.FIFA president Sepp Blatter stated he wants to set up an anti-corruption committee after bribery allegations shook football's governing body last year.
Blatter personally guaranteed that there would not be corruption of any kind at FIFA and that the committee would strengthen the organization's credibility and image.
Over in Europe
Chelsea's chances of retaining the English Premier League title suffered another setback on Sunday‚ as Aston Villa snatched a 3-3 draw in London.
The team had fought back to lead 3-2 with two goals in the last 10 minutes‚ but poor defending allowed Villa fullback Ciaran Clark to equalize with a free header in the second minute of time added on.
Now the result leaves Chelsea in fifth place and six behind leading Manchester clubs United and City.
MeanwhileSpanish champions Barcelona began 2011 with an 11th consecutive league victory on Sunday night to move five points ahead of rivals Real Madrid.
Young winger Pedro Gonzalez scored both goals in the 2-1 victory over Levante while World Cup winner Xavi equaled the Catalan club's all-time appearance record of 549 matches.
Over in Scotland‚ Celtic FC moved four points clear in the Scottish Premier League with a 2-0 victory against the defending champions the Rangers‚ as Greece striker Giorgios Samaras netted both goals.
Over in South America.Thousands of spectators turned out to cheer on competitors in the 2011 Dakar Rally as the historic race got underway in Buenos Aires‚ Argentina on Saturday.
The 15-day race will see 407 vehicles embark on a grueling 13 stages and attempt to cover a distance of 9‚500 kilometers‚ before crossing the finish line back in the Argentine capital on January 15th.
Last year's winner Spain's Carlos Sainz is back to defend his title‚ but he'll face a stiff challenge from the likes of Nasser al-Attiyah from Qatar and Mark Miller from the United States.
Moving over to Munich‚ Germany
Maria Pietilae-Holmner of Sweden and Ivica Kostelic of Croatia won the first ladies' and men's parallel slalom events in the Alpine Skiing World Cup on Sunday.
In front of tens of thousands of spectators‚ Pietilae-Holmner beat Tina Maze of Slovenia by 0.47 seconds in the second of two runs down the 200 meter slope.
Meanwhile‚ Kostelic defeated Julien Lizeroux of France over two heats in the men’s big final by a total of 1.61 seconds
The event in Munich was open to the top 16 Alpine skiers‚ who raced side by side down a 200-meter course that contained 20 gates.
Over in the Middle East.Now it was certainly an unusual tennis promotion as the world's top two male tennis players‚ Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal‚ played on a special water court ahead of the season opener in Qatar.
Now the two are the top seeds at the Qatar Open that begins on Monday‚ and will again be the players to beat during the 2011 ATP World Tour season‚ which comprises a total of 63 tournaments in 32 countries.
