요약정보
Happy Friday everyone and thank you for joining us on the 625 edition of World Sports‚ I’m Kim Young.
Today is the anniversary of the Korean War and let us honor the soldiers who fought and even sacrificed their lives for Korea.
Returning champions Italy drops out of the World Cup while Slovakia and Paraguay move on and Expectedly‚ Netherlands make the knockout stages and just like Korea‚ Japan accomplishes the feat of making the final sixteen for the first time on foreign soil.
2006 champions Italy were dumped out of the World Cup at the group stage‚ joining the humiliation of fellow European power France.
This event marked the first time the winner and runner-up from the previous World Cup had both failed to reach the second round.
Stunned and in awe‚ four time World Cup winners Italy looked shameful and shell-shocked after their match where they showed signs of life in the final minutes and in injury time.
Both European giants finished bottom in their groups.
Slovakia‚ appearing for the first time as an independent nation‚ stunned Italy 3-2 to reach the second round together with Paraguay in Group F.
The Slovaks danced for joy after a thrilling end-to-end match while the Italians‚ many too old to play in another World Cup‚ fell to their knees.
Japan scored a convincing 3-1 win against Denmark in the highest-scoring day of the World Cup so far.
Coming into the World Cup‚ especially after the Korea-Japan friendly match‚ Japan didn’t look to hot and in a way‚ pleasantly surprised the world with their superb group stage performance.
Japan‚ looking as one of the best Asian teams‚ joined Netherlands as the qualifiers from Group E. Cameroon were already out but got a consolation goal before being beaten 2-1 by the Netherlands.
The group in question is Group H‚ where it’s still anyone’s game between Spain and Switzerland and from the looks of it‚ it may go down to the wire as Chile is up on points with six‚ leading the group.
Spain and Switzerland have three and they both need wins if they want to be the second team in the round of sixteen.
From the looks of it though‚ the Swiss may have an easier time than Spain.
Charlie Wie also known as Wie Chang-soo is in share of the lead after the opening round of the Travelers Championship.
Wie shot a bogey free six under par 64 and sits on top of the leaderboard along with Padraig Harrington and Justin Rose.
Lee Seon-hwa carded a four under par 68 to grab a share of the lead alongside Stacy Lewis and Cristie Kerr at the LPGA Championship.
Conditions at Locust Hill was less than kind with gusty winds and scattered showers but that didn't stop Lee from grabbing the lead.
Park In-bee finished the first round one stroke back in second place.
And of course we cant go without mentioning this‚ the Korea national team will face Uruguay on route to the quarter-finals.
Although Uruguay is a powerful team that capitalizes on mistakes‚ Korea definately has a strong chance at getting over this obstacle and I as well as the nation will be cheering them on‚ on Saturday night.
That's all for sports‚ good night.
