I'm Kim Young with your sports updates and here's one we're all looking forward to.
The ultimate in winter sports‚ the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver will open its doors on the thirteenth of February.
2‚600 athletes from 84 nations will participate in this festival of the world where competitors will battle for glory for seventeen days.
Korea has the most number of athletes this year with 83 competing and the goal is to bring home over five gold medals and in the top ten in overall medal standings.
To further motivate the athletes‚ IOC member and former Samsung Group president Lee Kun-hee promised medalists an extra cash prize‚ about 50% of what is given to medalists by the government.
Lee will also be in Vancouver promoting and working to bring the 2018 Olympic Games to Pyeongchang.
With opening day weekend right around the bay‚ more than thirty athletes have been banned for violating anti-doping rules by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
The athletes who were banned were caught in the months leading up to the Games and were all registered in the past months.
The IOC will be conduction more than 2100 drug tests with about 500 of them being blood tests.
Defending champ Dustin Johnson has a one stroke lead after hitting an eight under 64 at the first round of the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
Johnson tore up the back nine with five consecutive birdies.
Right behind is Korean KJ Choi‚ or Choi Kyung-ju who did a bit of tearing the course of his own with an eagle and five birdies and on top of that‚ playing a near perfect round of golf.
Choi has a share for second place along with JB Holmes.
Professionals‚ celebrities and amateurs are also to tee off from the Spyglass Hill course at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
After losing 3-0 to China at the East Asia Championships‚ the Korea national team is looking for redemption by looking for a victory against Japan.
The Huh Jung-moo squad will face the Japan national team on Sunday‚ the Lunar New Years day in Tokyo at 7:15 PM.
Every Korea-Japan match is a heated one where national pride weigh heavily on both sides and this one will be an even more important match to win coming off of Korea's first ever loss to China.
Once more‚ team Korea is to use the controversial four back formation.
Before we go‚ the participation of Park Chu-young in the friendly match against Cote d'Ivoire is up in the air after reports said that Park injured his right hamstring.
According to team doctors‚ he will need three weeks of rehab.
