요약정보
Staying on the subject of family reunions‚ we are joined by one of our reporters who was at the Mount Kumgang resort in North Korea for three days during the first round of reunions: Unification Ministry correspondent Song Ji-sun. Glad to have you back‚ Ji-sun. Good to be back home‚ and here in the studio. We been watching the emotionally-charged scenes on TV here in South Korea over the past few days‚… but what was it like to be there and see it first-hand? It's a relief that all participants returned home safe and sound as the first round of reunions took place as scheduled out of those 97 tables there's not a single family that you can pass by without shedding tears. Families were saying they didn't know it was going to take this long to meet each other again with many of them already having held memorial services thinking their beloved ones had passed long ago. Although the sessions were extended by an hour from the previous reunion it cannot be enough. Separated families wish they could at least spend a night together‚ but both sides are restricted at Mount Kumkang's tourism complex‚ staying in different hotels. For the second round‚ South Korean families enter the venue ONLY AFTER their North Korean families are fully seated and ready to greet them at the tables. From what we could see here‚… it seemed to run pretty smoothly… was there any episode? There were some issues behind the scenes. During the first round upon crossing the border on Tuesday‚ North Korean officials screened ALL laptop computers of South Korean journalists AND tablet PCs of participating families. Transporting video footage shot by broadcast journalists was also delayed as the North's border office stopped the delegation on the first day. We are hoping that doesn't happen this time around but beside those interruptions‚ the event proceeded without issue. Participants from the two sides hoped that the reunions be held on a regular basis and North Korean officials I've talked to also expressed hopes of resuming the tour program at Mount Kumkang. Speaking of which how was the event venue? It's beein quite a while since it was last used to serve its purpose. As the venue was unused for SEVEN years‚ after the tour program was halted following the death of a South Korean tourist who was shot in 2008 by North Korean soldiers there were some concerns. But thanks to repair and maintenance efforts prior to the event‚ there were no particular inconveniences. South Korea's Unification Ministry has also dispatched fire trucks and ambulances to guarantee the safety of the South Korean participants with all medical resources on standby. But for the second round‚ the Korean Red Cross have revved up their medical support as there are older participants traveling from the South. No participant from the North is over the age of 90 but more than 30 South Koreans are‚ with two aged 98. This is the 20th reunion event held since the first one in 2000 but way more should be held‚ as over 66-thousand people are still on the waitlist. Thank you‚… Ji-sun for your insights and sharing your experiences during first round of reunions. Will keep you updated throughout the second round. Reporter : song@arirang.co.kr
