That's according to Seoul's foreign ministry Thursday in response to media reports that Japan is poised to issue its diplomatic paper for this year which includes fresh claims to Dokdo Island. ( ) To shed more light on the nation's easternmost island 215 km from the nation's east coast‚ Dokdo has been at the center of a territorial dispute between Seoul and Tokyo as Japan has repeatedly made false sovereignty claims over the rocks. To help the Korean public learn more about the island‚ the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency has released more geographical facts on Dokdo. The 168 meters above sea level is just the tip of the iceberg‚ literally. Measured from underwater‚ the rocks stand at a height of 2‚and-68 meters. That makes Dokdo taller than Mount Halla‚ Korea's highest peak at 1‚nine-hundred-and-50 meters. Dokdo has been known for its unique landscape and ecosystem‚ which is home to rare fauna and flora as well as marine life. According to government reports‚ Dokdo has abundant mineral resources that could become a great asset to the country. It was annexed by Japan in 1905 ahead of its colonial rule of the Korean peninsula and Korea regained sovereignty over the island after World War Il. Kim Hye-sung‚ Arirang News.
