A French convert to Islam is suspected to have been instrumental in the recent Paris attacks. Fabien Clain has been identified by U.S. authorities as the voice in Islamic State audio messages claiming responsibility for the attacks. The Washington Post reports‚ citing security sources‚ the 37-year-old is believed to have influenced more than 850 French and Belgian citizens thought to have traveled to Syria to fight. He also appears to have been involved with at least two plots in France this year. The report says Clain converted to Islam in the 1990s‚ but only moved toward extremism in the early 2000s and rose above the ranks quickly. By 2001‚ he was known to counter-terrorism groups in the U.S.‚ and in 2009‚ he was sentenced to five years in prison for recruiting jihadists to fight in Iraq. Le Monde reports Clain was involved in the attack on the Bataclan in Paris‚ where 89 people were killed‚ because of the venue's supposed ties to Israel. Reporter : danc@arirang.co.kr
