Anti-Pyongyang broadcasts have always been a powerful weapon against North Korea. South Korea's loudspeakers can be heard 24 kilometers away at night with a range of 10 kilometers during the day. It is a psychological warfare campaign to heap pressure on the North. Ideological lessons about democracy‚ advertisement of South Korea's developments‚ and criticism of North Korea's regime‚ including Kim Jong-un are broadcasted. But the most effective content includes weather‚ news from around the globe‚ and even K-pop??similar to radio station programming. Experts say it's the entertainment aspect that interests the soldiers and residents near the border‚ and may eventually lead to the realization that the world isn't exactly what the communist regime claims. Just last August‚ Seoul resumed its anti-Kim Jong-un broadcast for the first time in 11 years on August 10th‚ following the North's landmine attack and subsequent exchange of artillery fire. Broadcasts were suspended again after two weeks with the landmark agreement reached by the two sides' top officials. South Korea has aired broadcasts at the North since 1962 to 2004 when they were taken down after an inter-Korean agreement.
